What a great start to the 2017 SQ Zone OC6 Season……
For some, it w as an early 3am start for a select crew of team members that volunteered to chaperone Peter, our tower and our brand new canoe “Mellow Yellow” ensuring they both arrived safe and sound in one piece.
Our Golden Masters Mixed crew, were the first crew to christen Mellow Yellow, in Race 1 , the 8km Short Course Mixed event. The team worked well together and was able to bring home 1st placing in their category with a time of 58.10.7, and an overall placing of 18th out of 24 crews. Congratulations to Lesley, Peter, John, Bob, Joy & Di on a well earned result.
Next, saw our Open Mens contest Race 2, the 8km Short Course Mens event and they surely did not disappoint. This was the first time the guys have actually been in the same boat together and placing 3rd in the Open Mens division in a time of 49.04.2 was a great achievement. They placed 5th overall against 12 crews. Congratulations goes to Alby, Michael, Sef, Willie, Tamati and Daryl.
Being on the road early can definitely take its toll…..ask Baz……
Lastly, we saw our Masters Mixed contest Race 5, the 16km Long Course Mens and Mixed event. By this stage, conditions had picked up and there were times where more effort than required was needed. All team members stayed strong and remained focus to bring home the goods taking out 1st place in their division with a time of 1.25.03.4 and taking out 5th place over all out of 32 crews, beating all other mixed crews and majority of mens crews. Congratulations goes to Woggy, Lyn, Baz, Justin, Mel and the super steerer, Daryl.
Thank you to those club members that hung around all day to support the all other crews and well done to all Surfers teams. Those that stayed, rewarded themselves with a nice cold beer and some beautiful local fish and chips.

Great work Team Surfers – well deserved those local fish n chips… and nice to share with our local gal & Tweed paddler Mrs Wharewaka
