Race 6 of the OC6 season took us to Noosa Heads. It was a beautiful morning up in Noosa for the last race of the SQZ series. However, those conditions on the course were definitely the toughest of the series, particularly for the long course.
We had 5 teams compete in this event. 1 team in the 16km Long Course – Masters Mixed and 4 teams in the 8km Short Course – Open Men, 2 Open Mixed & Golden Masters Mixed.
Race 1 was our Masters Mixed’s opportunity to cement their success of the season, making it 5 from 5. This time, conditions were not so kind. With the winds picking up, it made it difficult at times to get any clean water however our Masters Mixed crew pushed through and came in 3rd overall out of ? crews and of course, placing 1st in their respective category. An outstanding finish for this crew who received 5 wins from 5 races over the series. A big congratulations to you all – Woggy, Paia, Mel, Lyn, Baz, Justin, Michael and our extraordinary super steerer, Daryl. You are the man!!!!
Race 3 saw our Open Men (1 Open, 4 Masters and 1 Senior Master) head out into reasonably suitable racing conditions for the 8km short course. Considering this was their 2nd time paddling together as a crew and 3 of them had just raced 16km in the long course, the boys went extremely well placing 1st in their division and 4th overall.
Race 4 saw both of our Open Mixed crews and Golden Masters Mixed crew take on the short course. All crews raced extremely well with our crews placing 1st (Gregs crew) (3rd overall) & 2nd (Lucky’s crew) (6th overall). Again a great effort by both crews particularly Greg’s crew who backed up after competing in the previous race and paddling together as a mixed crew for the first time. Unfortunately, our Golden Masters Mixed who crossed in 2nd place did not go past the rock wall and received a DNF. This result too would have given them a 100% success rate, like the Masters Mixed crew. A huge congratulations to you all on a superb job well done.
Thank you to Peter once again who towed canoes and the Masters mixed crew who stuck around and supported their fellow team mates in unloading and packing canoes before the long haul home.
Next stop…..Long Distance Nationals……
