Surfers Paradise Outrigger Canoe Club > Club News > Singapore Ocean Cup – 2019

Hosted by Singapore Paddling Club

Sentosa and Singapore’s Southern Islands became the home of OC1/2, Surf Ski, SUP and OC6 paddlers last weekend in support of this iconic event.

Set in picturesque Sentosa and Singapore’s Southern Islands, this event has been amazing testing some of the most experienced paddlers not just physically & technically with it’s strong & difficult currents but it tested you also mentally with heat & humidity on & off the water.

Great to see so many clubs from around the world in attendance. Approximately 24 Clubs with over 450 – 500 paddlers in attendance.

This year our club represented strong bring home 5 medal’s

Saturday kicked off with woman’s singles races and men’s OC6 race – Congratulations to the following that participated.

  • Jo Grammatico – Bronze in OC1 short course
  • Paia Engu – Silver in V1 short course
  • Melissa Wetere – Gold in V1 short course

Adding to the medal count was our men’s crew who proved to be a force to be reckoned with, placing 2nd in the men’s OC6 long course, despite leading the majority of the race. Local knowledge definitely was an advantage!

Sunday saw our women’s OC6 race in the long course and they were up against some serious competition and very experienced crews. This reflects the caliber of paddlers now competing at this event..

Congratulations to our men who represented our club in the men’s singles races and particularly those that medalled.

  • Darryl Wetere – Bronze in V1 long course
  • Dave Atkinson – 8th in OC1 long course
  • Justin Wharewaka – 6th in V1 long course

This year’s event saw our club members push outside their comfort zones in the singles events and in doing so, were able to achieve some great results.

Special mention to Dave Atkinson and Justin Wharewaka from Scarborough OCC and Tweed OCC who helped make up our men’s crew.

Singapore Paddle Club are truly wonderful hosts & we can’t sing the praises of this event enough. Onwards & upwards from here, new challenges & goals to be made.

Big love to our international paddling family & friends from around the globe. As always it is wonderful to see you all & to make new friends.
